Last Thursday, the International Day of Peace, I attended a talk hosted by LSE Centre for Women Peace and Security. The topic of discussion for the evening was UN Peace Operations: Politics, Human Rights and Leadership.
By Tekie Quaye
I was fortunate enjoy the discussion between Diane Corner (Deputy Special Representative and Deputy Head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA)), Bintou Keita (the newly appointed Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations) and Karin Landgren (who is the first woman to have headed three United Nations peace operations). The evening was chaired by Bela Kapur is a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre for Women, Peace and Security.
One of the key focuses of the discussion centred on the question of what are the challenges to peace and security today. What are the biggest challenges for the UN and how do these especially affect women? This proved a large question, one which opened up the opportunity for engaging and robust dialogue, between three highly accomplished women.
